Help Us Wage Justice for the Working Poor

Thanks to generous support from our donors, The Wage Justice Center has in less than three years:

  • Collected more than $540,000 in wages and penalties owed to low-income workers.

  • Collaborated with organizations such as the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON) and Instituto de Educacion Popular del Sur de California (IDEPSCA), Bet Tzedek Legal Services, the UCLA Labor Center, and the AFL-CIO.

  • Served as a key member of community-based workers’ rights campaigns for day laborers (in conjunction with NDLON and IDEPSCA) and advocated for carwash workers (as part of the CLEAN Carwash Campaign).

  • Provided legal research and technical assistance to the Los Angeles Taxi Workers Alliance campaign.

  • Prosecuted several cases using innovative legal theories for overcoming unscrupulous business schemes designed to shirk responsibility for underpayment of wages. Many of these cases had been deemed uncollectable by California Franchise Tax Board.

  • Run a successful clinic/volunteer program using more than 25 law students and university students. Our work with these students helps deliver assistance to workers while raising community awareness of the exploitation faced by low-income workers in California.

  • Developed training materials and provided training to hundreds of advocates in the best practices for enforcing wage rights and judgments for unpaid wages as part of our work in the carwash campaign as well as at legal conferences sponsored by the AFL-CIO Lawyers Coordinating Committee, the Hispanic National Bar Association, and the National Lawyers Guild.

  • Provided information and assistance to a newly formed collections unit in the California Department of Labor, Division of Labor Standards Enforcement and lead efforts by advocates statewide to improve the effectiveness of the state government’s collection of unpaid wages.

Our generous funders have contributed support to our mission of promoting wage justice and combating the abuses of bad-faith employers. Our supporters know that a donation to The Wage Justice Center will provide an immediate, measurable and long-term solution — ultimately supplying workers with the tools they need to ensure wage justice.
